VIA RENTAL CAR

1.  From San Francisco International Airport

Drive north towards San Francisco on Highway 101 and East over the Bay Bridge to Interstate 80.  Drive East on Interstate 80 to Sacramento where I-80 joins Highway 50.  Drive East on Highway 50 to South Lake Tahoe until you reach the large intersection that adjoins Highway 89.  Drive north on Highway 89 just past Camp Richardson (about 4 km) where you will see a sign marked Fallen Leaf Lake.  Take the Fallen Leaf Lake road (road will become one car width) to and around Fallen Leaf Lake until you reach a concrete bridge.  Drive over the bridge to the private grounds of the Stanford Sierra Camp and Conference Center.  It takes about 4.5 hours from San Francisco to South Lake Tahoe.  Try to avoid Friday afternoons to drive there since traffic becomes very heavy and slow (please click on the following link  for a map of directions.) Upon reaching the Conference Center, please park your car on the parking lot past the main lodge.

Drive south on Highway 395 through Carson City (the capital of Nevada).  Just south of Carson City turn right on Highway 50 and drive West to South Lake Tahoe after reaching Spooner Summit (7156 feet or 2.18 km) and down to South Lake Tahoe.  Drive west on Highway 50 past Stateline until you reach Highway 89.  Turn right on Highway 89 and drive North past Camp Richardson (about 4 km) to Fallen Leaf Lake road.  Turn left onto Fallen Leaf Lake road and follow it all the way to Fallen Leaf Lake.  Drive around the lake until you reach a concrete bridge.  Drive over the bridge to the private grounds of the Stanford Sierra Camp and Conference Center.  It takes about 4.5 hours from San Francisco to South Lake Tahoe.  Please park your car on the parking lot past the main lodge.

C. VACATIONING: EARLY BIRDS OR AFTER THE CONFERENCE

Participants might wish to spend a few extra days in Reno or South Shore, Lake Tahoe.  Resort hotels and meals are relatively inexpensive in Reno but not in South Shore. D. WEATHER AND CLOTHES TO WEAR

Stanford Sierra Conference Center and accommodation facilities are located on the west shore of Fallen Leaf Lake, where the elevation is 2.1 km with mountain peaks 3.4 km high. In September, the climate is mild and very pleasant (15-24ºC).  Because of the high nearby mountains (the Sierra Nevada mountains), there may be occasional short rain showers (summer thunder storms) in the higher elevations. The thin mountain air causes temperatures to fall rapidly in the evenings. Thus, a light rain jacket, sweater will be needed. Dress is casual, informal. Wear for comfort and relaxation. Good outdoor shoes will be needed if you wish to hike (see below).

E. RECREATION DURING CONFERENCE BREAKS

Our conference is on the border of the Tahoe Wilderness. A wilderness pass which is obtained at the front desk provides you with hiking access to many far reaching trails in the Tahoe National Forest. There are many alpine lakes and towering peaks that provide scenic views of Lake Tahoe as well as wildlife such as black bears, bald and golden eagles, coyotes, skunks, raccoons, deer, otter, chipmunks, pine squirrels, and rattle snakes.

The conference center provdes private access to Fallen Leaf Lake. Sailboats, canoes, and kayaks can be checked out at the conference dock.

There are two tennis courts available to participants. You should bring your own tennis rackets and balls, but equipment is also available.

For sightseers, bus and sailing tours can be arranged at South Shore. There are daily cruises to Emerald Bay to see Vikingsholm. Also there are trips to the Thunderbird Lodge Historic Site and Ehrman Mansion for walking tours of the estates. The Ehrman Mansion is where the Godfather was filmed.  Motor boats may be rented by the hour at various ports around Lake Tahoe.  South Shore (Stateline) offers some of the finest gaming facilities, disco dancing, and big name shows.  Show reservations can be made through the hotel resort casino (see web sites above).

F. EMERGENCY CONTACT INFORMATION

There are no telephones in individual rooms. Stanford Sierra Conference Center has public telephones on bottom and upper level floors in main lodge. Their direct telephone number is 530.541.1244. There is always a clerk or assistant available at the main desk and office on a 24 hour basis.
